GB provisional licence holders: rules changed on 1 October 2026

Since 1 October 2026, holders of a GB provisional licence can no longer book or take a Category B car theory or practical test in Northern Ireland if they have not already obtained a full licence in that category. The Northern Ireland residency declaration route for car tests has been discontinued. To take a car test in Northern Ireland, you need a Northern Ireland provisional driving licence.

For a practical test you will need

your driver licence number and date of birth
a valid email address (check your spam or junk folder for our emails)

For a theory test you will need

a valid UK driving licence with a Northern Ireland address
a valid email address to receive a booking confirmation

How test availability works

For Category B car tests, new appointments are currently released about three months in advance, on the first working day of each month. Appointments also become available at other times when candidates change or cancel their bookings.

If you want an earlier test, it helps to be flexible: look at more than one test centre, consider different days and times, including evening and weekend appointments, and keep checking for cancellations. Only take an earlier test if you are ready for it.
